Chronic Stress

What is chronic stress?

Stress, in itself, is an adaptive biological response that prepares us to face challenges. However, when demands persist for a prolonged period and exceed the capacity for adaptation, chronic stress sets in—a sustained state of physiological and psychological hyperactivation, associated with alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and elevated cortisol levels.

This condition is linked to cardiovascular, immunological, and mental health problems, and is recognized as a risk factor for anxiety, depression, and burnout syndrome.

Causes and factors of maintenance

  • Work or academic overload Tight deadlines, constant multitasking, and lack of recognition.
  • Interpersonal conflicts — toxic relationships, lack of social support, or intense family demands.
  • Economic uncertainty Unemployment, debt, pressure to maintain a high standard of living.
  • Perfectionism and high self-criticism — unrealistic internal standards, extreme fear of failure.
  • Lack of recovery — insufficient hours of sleep, lack of leisure time, sedentary lifestyle.
  • Previous experiences of trauma or early stress — can decrease physiological resilience to stress.

Most Common Symptoms of Chronic Stress

  • Physicists: Tension headaches, persistent muscle pain, gastrointestinal disorders, constant fatigue, initial insomnia or early awakenings.

  • Emotional: Irritability, feeling overwhelmed, loss of motivation, apathy, or persistent restlessness.

  • Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, ruminative thinking about tasks and responsibilities.

  • Behavioral: Increased or decreased appetite, excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol or nicotine, social isolation, procrastination or hyperactivity at work.

If you experience several of these symptoms for more than three months, it is advisable to have a clinical evaluation.

Burnout is a subtype of chronic stress specifically related to work, characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. Both benefit from early intervention.

CBT protocols for chronic stress typically range from 8 to 12 sessions. Cases with multiple comorbidities may require prolonged follow-up.

Validated scales such as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory help to quantify stress and burnout levels during clinical assessment.

The therapist guides you step-by-step through the practices, provides supporting digital materials, and adjusts the plan to your specific situation to ensure its effectiveness.

The psychologist will listen to your story, understand your goals, and explain how the treatment will proceed. This is a time to build trust and define the therapeutic plan.
