Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural preparatory response to danger; it becomes problematic when worry is persistent, intense, and disproportionate to the circumstances. According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and NICE clinical guidelines, we speak of an anxiety disorder when symptoms persist for at least six months and cause a significant impact on work, relationships, or physical health.

Most common symptoms of anxiety

  • Cognitive: Rumination, fear of losing control, difficulty concentrating, catastrophic thoughts.

  • Emotional: Constant apprehension, irritability, a feeling of imminent danger.

  • Physicists: tachycardia, sweating, tremors, muscle tension, breathing difficulties, nausea, sleep disturbances.

  • Behavioral: Avoidance of social or professional situations, need for constant security, use of substances to alleviate anxiety.

Causes and risk factors for anxiety

Scientific literature indicates a multifactorial contribution:

  1. Genetic predisposition Twin studies suggest moderate heritability.

  2. Adverse experiences in childhood Trauma, neglect, and bullying increase vulnerability.

  3. Style of thinking Perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty foster chronic worry.

  4. Prolonged stress Demanding professional or academic environments keep the alert system activated.

  5. Neurobiological imbalance Alterations in amygdala and prefrontal cortex circuits are associated with hyper-reactivity to danger.

How We Help

Professional Psychological Support
for Anxiety

Anxiety is a useful emotion that prepares us to deal with challenges. However, it becomes a clinical disorder when fear or worry is intense, persistent, and interferes with daily activities.

International studies and national guidelines indicate that evidence-based online psychotherapy — especially Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — offers comparable results to in-person therapy, with the added advantage of greater accessibility.

How can we help?

Therapies with proven effectiveness

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Considered a first-line treatment for anxiety according to NICE and American Psychological Association guidelines. It focuses on identifying dysfunctional thoughts, gradual exposure to triggers, and developing coping skills.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

It focuses on accepting unpleasant internal experiences and on values-driven action. It has shown solid results in generalized and social anxiety disorders.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBCT/MBSR)

They reduce rumination and emotional reactivity, reinforcing the regulation of the autonomic nervous system.

Most people achieve complete remission or substantial reduction of symptoms with evidence-based psychotherapy. The goal is to provide tools that allow them to independently manage potential relapses.

Psychotherapy alone is often sufficient. In moderate to severe cases, anxiolytics or antidepressants may be prescribed by a psychiatrist in combination with psychological therapy.

CBT or ACT programs typically range from 8 to 16 sessions. The final duration depends on the severity, pace of progress, and goals defined in conjunction with the therapist.

The psychologist will listen to your story, understand your goals, and explain how the treatment will proceed. This is a time to build trust and define the therapeutic plan.

Most sessions are conducted via video to ensure greater intimacy, but if you prefer, you can opt for audio-only or chat-only sessions. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable.
