Phobias

What are specific phobias?

Specific phobias belong to the group of anxiety disorders and are characterized by intense and persistent fear in the face of specific objects or situations (for example, flying, heights, blood, animals, driving).

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), the diagnosis requires:

  • Immediate fear or anxiety in response to the phobic stimulus;
  • Active or sustained avoidance with significant discomfort;
  • Duration of at least six months;
  • Clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas.

Most Common Symptoms of Phobias

  • Physiological: Tachycardia, sweating, tremors, feeling of suffocation or fainting; in the blood-injection-injury subtype, a sudden drop in blood pressure frequently occurs.
  • Cognitive: Thoughts of catastrophe ("the plane is going to crash"), vivid mental images, overestimation of danger.
  • Behavioral: Avoiding flying, refusing to undergo tests, running away from dogs, driving on indirect routes to avoid bridges.

Causes and Risk Factors of Social Anxiety

  • Acquisition through direct learning — traumatic experience (dog bite, severe turbulence).
  • Vicarious conditioning — observe fear reactions in parents or in the media.
  • Information transmission — hearing alarming stories about certain dangers.
  • Biological predisposition — An evolutionary tendency to fear certain stimuli (snakes, heights) facilitates the acquisition of phobic disorders.
  • Temperamental factors Behavioral inhibition and sensitivity to anxiety increase vulnerability.

How We Help

Professional Psychological Support
for Phobia

Despite seeming "limited," a specific phobia can seriously compromise quality of life:

  • Increased financial costs (alternative routes, postponed physical health therapies).
  • Missed professional opportunities (travel, in-person meetings, medical appointments).
  • Family stress (conditional vacation plans, relationship tension).
  • Physical health at risk (postponement of medical procedures due to fear of needles or surgery).

Recognizing these effects makes it easier to decide whether to seek specialized help from... online psychologists with experience in the subject.

Therapies with proven effectiveness

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

It is considered the first-line approach by the American Psychological Association and NICE. It is based on understanding the fear cycle through psychoeducation and building an exposure hierarchy, which goes from the least feared situations to the most challenging. Studies indicate that this treatment can achieve remission rates between 60% and 90% after only 4 to 8 well-structured sessions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

This is another approach with positive results, especially when used as a complement to exposure. It focuses on accepting unpleasant internal sensations, promoting actions aligned with the individual's personal values. It is especially useful in cases of cognitive fusion, when the person interprets fear as evidence of imminent danger, helping them to reframe this perception.

Applied tension technique

Indicated for the blood-injection-wound subtype, it combines muscle contractions that help prevent fainting during exposure to the stimulus.

Avoidance relieves anxiety in the short term, but reinforces fear in the long term and increasingly limits life. Gradual exposure is the recommended clinical approach.

Focused exposure programs can resolve simple specific phobias in 4–8 sessions. Complex cases or those with comorbidities require longer intervention.

Visual displays and virtual reality are useful for initiating the process, but gradually transitions to real-world stimuli to consolidate learning.

Yes. Follow-up studies at 1 and 5 years indicate that gains are maintained, provided that occasional sun exposure continues.

The psychologist will listen to your story, understand your goals, and explain how the treatment will proceed. This is a time to build trust and define the therapeutic plan.
