Insomnia
What is insomnia?
Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early, accompanied by complaints of fatigue, irritability, or decreased daytime performance.
According to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3) and the DSM-5-TR, a diagnosis requires symptoms at least three times a week for three months or more, with significant functional impact. A distinction is made between:
- Insomnia of onset (difficulty falling asleep ≥ 30 min);
- Maintenance insomnia (prolonged or frequent awakenings);
- Early awakening (before the desired time, without being able to fall back asleep).
Many cases combine several patterns, evolving into chronic insomnia if left untreated.
Why does insomnia develop?
- Physiological predisposition — hyperactivity of the nervous system, a genetic predisposition for greater reactivity to stress.
- Precipitating factors Life events (grief, separation, job change), chronic pain, medical or psychiatric illnesses.
- Perpetuating factors — Inadequate sleep habits (caffeine at night, blue screens in bed), long naps, ruminative thoughts ("if I don't fall asleep I'll fail tomorrow"), compensatory behaviors (staying in bed watching series), which reinforce wakefulness.
Spielman's model (3 Ps) demonstrates how these components interact, justifying the multimodal approach to treatment.
Most Common Symptoms of Insomnia
- Persistent fatigue and loss of energy;
- Daytime sleepiness with an increased risk of accidents;
- Irritability and emotional instability;
- Decreased concentration and memory;
- Tension headaches or muscle aches;
- Reduced productivity and absenteeism at work;
- Increased susceptibility to anxiety, depression, and hypertension.
These findings confirm that insomnia is not just "lack of rest," but a health problem that requires clinical intervention.

How We Help
Professional Psychological Support
for Insomnia
- Mental health: Insomnia significantly increases the risk of developing depression, anxiety, other sleep disorders, and can promote substance abuse.
- Physical health: It is associated with a higher incidence of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and a weakened immune system.
- Productivity: Lack of adequate sleep contributes to absenteeism, unproductive presenteeism, higher staff turnover, and an increase in decision-making errors.
- Personal relationshipsInsomnia can cause irritability, social isolation, family conflicts, and reduced marital satisfaction.
- Economic impact: This translates to a loss of individual income and increased costs for health systems and organizations.
Recognizing these impacts reinforces the need for specialized intervention with psychologists experienced in the treatment of insomnia.
How can we help?
Therapies with proven effectiveness
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is considered the first-line approach for treating this problem, and is recommended by international organizations such as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and NICE. This therapy combines different strategies that address both behaviors and thoughts related to sleep.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
It helps to accept awakenings and reduce anxiety related to difficulty sleeping.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Insomnia (MBTI)
Focused on reducing rumination and cognitive hypervigilance, improving acceptance of nighttime awakenings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We're here to help.

No. Some people have a short sleep requirement (< 6 hours) without daytime dysfunction. Insomnia implies suffering or functional impairment.
Typical online CBT-I programs last 6–8 sessions per week; brief 4-session interventions also show effectiveness, but may require more intensive practice.
Supplementation may help with circadian rhythm disorders or jet lag. In chronic insomnia, it has modest benefits and should be complementary to, not a substitute for, CBT-I.
Vigorous activity up to 2 hours before bedtime can delay the sleep phase; light exercise or stretching is recommended.
The psychologist will listen to your story, understand your goals, and explain how the treatment will proceed. This is a time to build trust and define the therapeutic plan.
