ADHD in Adults

What is ADHD in adults?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) doesn't magically disappear with the transition to adolescence: about half of diagnosed young people continue to exhibit clinically relevant symptoms into adulthood.

The DSM-5-TR describes two main sets of symptoms — inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity — which, when they persist beyond age 17 and cause marked difficulties at work, in school, or in relationships, constitute adult-onset ADHD. Many people reach adulthood without a formal diagnosis, attributing their "chronic chaos" to personality traits or lack of discipline.

Why does ADHD occur?

Research indicates a heritability greater than 70% for %, involving multiple genes that regulate dopamine and norepinephrine in the fronto-striatal circuits of executive control. Prenatal factors (exposure to tobacco or alcohol during pregnancy), prematurity, and early psychosocial stress can increase vulnerability. However, the adult environment, fragmented work rhythm, constant notifications, and lack of routines amplify the difficulties of those who already have a neurobiological predisposition.

Most Common Symptoms of ADHD in Adults

Inattention

  • Constantly forgetting appointments, keys, or documents;
  • Difficulty following lengthy instructions or completing projects;
  • Extreme distraction by external stimuli or internal thoughts;
  • Repeated postponement of tasks that require sustained mental effort.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity

  • A feeling of inner restlessness, restless legs, and a need to touch objects.;
  • Talking excessively or interrupting conversations;
  • Making hasty decisions, impulse purchases, and abrupt changes of plans;
  • Difficulty waiting one's turn in lines or meetings.

These symptoms vary in intensity depending on context, stress, and sleep quality, which contributes to underdiagnosis.

How We Help

Professional Psychological Support
for ADHD in Adults

    • Career: recurring delays, difficulties in meeting deadlines, frequent job changes, feelings of underachievement.
    • Finances: Poor money management, impulsive purchases, late payment fees.
    • Relations: Forgetting important dates, constant interruptions, irritability; high risk of marital conflict.
    • Mental well-being: higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and substance abuse as a form of self-regulation.
    • Security: Traffic accidents and minor domestic incidents occur more frequently.

    Without intervention, these effects accumulate and reduce quality of life; with specialized support, it is possible to develop effective management strategies.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for ADHD (CBT-AD)

Programs consisting of 10 to 16 sessions include weekly planning and setting realistic goals, breaking down tasks into concrete steps (“microtasks”), training in time, space and priority management, and developing self-monitoring and self-compassion to deal with mistakes. Controlled studies demonstrate a significant reduction in perceived disorganization and impulsivity, with gains maintained in 12-month follow-up.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

An intervention that improves psychological flexibility, reduces paralyzing perfectionism, and promotes action aligned with personal values, even when attention wanders.

Structured Psychoeducation

It allows one to understand how ADHD works and recognize behavioral patterns, which reduces guilt and increases motivation for change.

Patterns of physical hyperactivity usually lessen, but attention difficulties and impulsivity may persist. Intervention focuses on management strategies, not on a complete elimination of symptoms.

Clinical assessment includes a structured interview, standardized scales (ASRS-V1.1), developmental history, and exclusion of other causes of inattention or agitation.

It is a neurobiological pattern with benefits (creativity, ability to hyper-focus on interests) and challenges. With appropriate strategies, it can lead to achieving goals and building a fulfilling life.

Coaching helps with execution, but psychotherapy addresses limiting beliefs, emotional management, and comorbidities, which are essential for sustained progress.

The psychologist will listen to your story, understand your goals, and explain how the treatment will proceed. This is a time to build trust and define the therapeutic plan.
